Outdoor Family, Tips & Tricks

filed under:

As a Missoula & Bitterroot family photographer, I often hear many of the same questions from families before their session. Whether you’re planning a maternity session, family photos, or portraits with your little ones, knowing what to expect can help you feel relaxed and confident going into your session.

The most common questions that start to build up with the anticipation for your Family or Portrait session….

Before every session, there’s always that little voice in the back of your mind:

What if my kids don’t cooperate?
What if I feel awkward?
What if the weather doesn’t work out?

I hear these all the time — and they’re completely normal. Let’s talk through them so you can step into your session feeling relaxed and excited.

01. How will the location be chose for my session?

Just give me a general idea of what you want: mountains, river, open field, etc. and how far you’re willing to travel. I will handle the exact location. If you have a family property or a specific area, please let me know and we can work out the details.
02. What if my kids/significant other don’t have a long attention span?
I’m a mama so I definitely understand that kids are not always the best at cooperating when taking photos or asked to sit still — and that’s totally fine. We we can acknowledge that maybe it isn’t always a spouses FAVORITE thing to do photos. But I promise we will keep the mood light and move as needed. Happy kiddos/spouse = happy photos.
03. What if I’m awkward in front of the camera?
That is okay! There is always an adjustment period but as long as you bring an open heart and mind to your session, I will handle the rest.
04. Will you edit my appearance for me?
You are beautiful as you are. I believe in capturing each authentic human just as you are, all your beautiful characteristics. We will use all the posing tricks to accentuate your greatest form. Don’t worry, I will do minor touchups to anything that isn’t naturally yours. -small scratches, blemishes, etc.
05. When will I receive my images?
Pending what session you booked, family sessions are 3-4 weeks given the season. But don’t worry, I am a big believer in sending sneak peeks, so you won’t wait that long to see a sample of our time together!
06. What happens if the Weather is bad for my schedule session?
My motto is to have an open heart and open mind. Weather is out of our control, we all want sunshine and warmth but sometimes weather changes. Weather switch up can make for an extra special session, who doesn’t love a good Notebook vibe?! Obviously, if it’s pouring or way too cold, we’ll chat!
07. What should I wear to my session and what if I need help picking outfits?
I’ve got you! It’s all part of the process and once you book, I help style your WHOLE family. Whether you have 6 kids or just you and your sweetheart. I always love seeing your options and helping you choose the best.
08. How many images will I receive?
Each family is different. I don’t believe in limiting your number of memories. You’ll have more than you know what to do with!
09. What is my background in Photography?
I’ve been a photographer for over 10 years. Including the great privilege of instructing for several years at Rocky Mountain School of Photography. I believe in continuing education to keep learning and growing to give YOU the best possible experience and photos.

At the end of the day, this isn’t just about photos.

It’s about freezing the way your little one holds your hand.
The way your spouse looks at you when you’re not paying attention.
The season you’re in right now — messy, beautiful, fleeting.

My heart is to make this easy, joyful, and meaningful for you. If you’re on the fence, take this as your sign. Let’s document your story in a way that feels natural, relaxed, and truly you.

I can’t wait to create something beautiful together.
